The Exhibition opening was attended by more than 80 people, clearly showing the interest and market for new and different art here in Port Moresby.

Opim Eye is the creation of four of PNG’s most interesting young artists, a group that Dr Mel says are a new category of young people growing up in PNG. Jeffrey and Mairi Feeger, Gazellah Bruder and Laben Sakale came up with the concept, curated the exhibition and plan to do more, with a second exhibition to be held in the coming months.

See: The exhibition at OPIM EYE ONLINE EXHIBITION.
Hear: Gazellah Bruder talk about her work at OPIM EYE - GAZELLAH BRUDER PODCAST.

While most of the work was snapped up on opening night, you can contact the artists at opimeye@gmail.com to find out where you can get more.

Pasifik Nau hopes to bring you more information on Opim Eye soon.

Entitled Hailans to Ailans, which means “Highlands to Islands” in Melanesian Pidgin, the show will represent both male and female artists from the different regions of Papua New Guinea.

As artists struggle to retain the rich artistic heritage being challenged by the forces of modernization, this cultural project will promote global recognition of the meanings, values and diversity of Papua New Guinea contemporary visual arts.

This two-part exhibition will include a program of gallery events and outreach visits to the community at two locations, the Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery in the UK and the Alcheringa Gallery in Canada (see below for details).

Participating artists include Dr. Michael Mel, a performance artist and Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Goroka, as well as two artists featured on Pasifik Nau, Martin Morububuna, a painter living in Port Moresby but originally from the Trobriand Islands, and Tom Deko, a metal sculptor from Bena presently affiliated with the University of Goroka, in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

Cathy Kata, a fibre artist, also from the highlands, and creator of a fashion range known as Bilum Wear will also present her work alongside master carvers from the Sepik River region including Teddy Balangu, Lucas Tangun, Kaua Gita, and Michael Timbin, represented at both galleries by Claytus Yambon from Korogo Village.

To continue a rich period of cultural exchange begun in 2006 between the Iatmul of Papua New Guinea and Coast Salish of Canada, artists Leslie Sam (lessLIE), a painter in the Salish tradition, and John Marston, an innovative Coast Salish wood sculptor, have been invited to represent the Northwest Coast of Canada.

In London, the participation of Rosanna Raymond, a performance/installation artist of Samoan descent, will further enrich the opportunities for cross-cultural connection.

The exhibition is co-curated by Dr. Pamela Rosi and Dr. Michael Mel, and funding has been provided by the Christensen Fund and the NASFUND.

PART 1 | September 16 - October 17, 2009
Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery
2a Conway Street, Fitzroy Square
London, W1T 6BA
United Kingdom
Tel: (44) 0.20.7436.4899
www.r-h-g.co.uk

PART 2 | November 5 - November 26, 2009
Alcheringa Gallery
665 Fort Street
Victoria, British Columbia, V8W 1G6
Canada
Tel: 250.383.8224
www.alcheringa-gallery.com
